A CLEVER MUSICIAN.
HONORS FOR NEW ZEALAND.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last nighf. Two years ago two Wellington lads — ThonSas and Garnet Trowoll —who showed marked taloots, wore sent to tho Brussels Coneervatorium to continue their studies in music. Thomas is a celloist and his playing attracted tho attention of Gerardy when that gifted player visited the city. News has been received from time to time of the lad’s .progross, indicating that his early promise was being fulfilled. Word now comes to hand that ho won the prize at the publio examination held at the Royal Conservatorium for cello playing. This is the highest achievement possible by any student at the Conservatorium and one of the principal musical prizes to be won in Europe. The judges are virtuosi from other countries, and the candidatoß are submitted to a searching preliminary test before being allowed to compete. Young Trowell received a great ovation after his playing. He is the first student to win the prize at the age of seventeen. For several years ao award has been made, the judges not believing the standard of candidates warranted it being given. He is believed to ;be the first Englishman to win the prize, as be is certainly the first colonial.
