COMPLIMENTARY CONCERT

Despite the boisterous state of the weather last evening there was a large and appreciative andience on the occasion of the complimentary concert tendered to the widow of the late Detective Nixon. A first-class programme was submitted, and almost every item was encored. Miss Cooper, of Auckland, created a most favorable impression, and was enthusiastically encored for each number, being heard to particular advantage in the “ Carnival ” and Tosti’o “ Good-bye.” Miss Cooper possesses a soprano voice of excellent quality. Mrs P. Barry was warmly received, and greatly pleased the audie—ce with her rendering of ” O Dry Those Tears," The duet “ Life’s Dream

is o'er,” in which she took part with Mr F, Teat, was without doubt one of the gems of tho evening. Miss Kirkby was encored for her singing of 11 Once,” and Mr H. E, Hill wae several times recalled for his humorous numbers. Messrs W. J. Barlow, D. Trent, It. Mitchell, and F. Teat and Captain Whitely added greatly to the success of tho concert, tbpir singing bemg greatly appreciated. Several instrumental numbers were given by Messrs Zjichtwark and Gittos. The concert concluded with a soreaming farce, “Tho Chinese Question,” by Mr Alfred Rice and his talented company. The piece was played with spirit, and created great amusement. Miss Mcllhono and Mr Jv H- presided at

the piano during the evening. The instrument used was kindly lent by the London and Berlin Piano Company. Greet credit is due to the promoters of the con. eort, Messrs C. Niold, W. Webb, JV IT, Gittos and Hancox, for the assiduous manner in which they worked, particularly the last-named, who put up a record in disposing of tickets. The concert wee under the supervision of Mr J. H. Gittoß, who is to be heartily complimented upon (he success achieved.
