POLICE FIGHT
INSPECTOR ATTACKED BY A CONSTABLE. Melbourne. Jnno JB. A member of tho polios foroo has been called upon to answer a charge of being drunk on duty, and assaulting bis superior officer with his bs ton. It is alleged that at midnight on Friday Sub-Inspector Hannan noticed a constable on duty near tho Public Library stagger as if druDk. A fire telephone was near and the inspector rang up the Russell street polioo station ord secured the attendance of n senior constable. Sub-Inspector Hannan thou up proachedthe constable and suggested that he should go off doty. The latter poured out a torrent of foul language, grabbed bis baton, and struck viciously at the inspector’s head. The blow missed his bead, but fell on the back of the neck. The constable followed up the attack, bus before further domage was done the senior constable rushed in and wrenched tho baton froth bis hand, and attempted to arrest him. The man fought medly and before he could bo overpowered several other policemen had to be called from Russell-sr-oet.
