A ROBBERY.

(Special to Times,.) Auckland, Saturday.

At the Police Court yesterday Peter Frederick Wiikie was charged with stealing £3O, tho money of Harry Hunt, on June 10.

Harry Hunt, grocer, said he and accused came to Auckland from Gisborno on Juno 1. Tho next day he cashed a cheque for £49, receiving four £lO notes, one £5 note and four £1 notes. He put tho money in a box under Ms bed. He and accused wont to the races on the 10th, and in the evening witness lent accused £l. On the 12th witness had occasion to go to his box, and found that the Jbox had been broken open, and threo ,£lO notes were missing. John Taylor, teller at the National Bank, gave evidence as to cashing tho cheque for £49.

Detective McMahon said ho and Detective Fahey arrested accused on Juno 10 on a charge of false peoteecss. When searched at the police station they found £29 6s on him. Two £lO notes were in that amount. On the 13tu a complaint was made by Hunt that ho had been robbed of £3O. When ho charged accused with stealing it ho first denied it. saying he bad won the money at tho races. Later, however, he admitted having taken the money, but said he was tempted on to break the box open. He also said he was sorry, as ha bad a wife and family in Gisborne. The accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence.
