FARMERS’ CONFERENCE.

[(Per Press Association.') Stratford, last night. The Farmers’ Union Proyincial Conferonce opened here to-day. The Mayor welcomed the delegates, expressing the view that the Union Institution was of great bouefit to the colony. The presideri in his opening address congratulated farmers on the faot that they had a fairly prosperous season, though the olimutic conditions had not been so good as in a normal soason. Prices had been well maintained, and he thought they might look forward to a good year to come. With I regard to fire insurance, £40,000 worth of business was required to be in hand before a start was made, and they now had £35,700. The balance would not be hard to get. With regard to the Labor Party, who were now stumping the country, he asked what the farmers were doing to , educate themselves and others m tbo quostion? It was necessary for farmers to place their case before the people, and organise to protect what was probably the most honorable industry in the country. Several remits were discussed. A resolution ;was carried that the endeavor of the Union to obtain for all Crown tenants the option,to secure the frehold bo strenuously con tinned.
