THE HARBORMASTER

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)

Sir,—As a ratepayer I should like to see I a full enquiry into Captain Cumming’s I letter to the Harbor Board with reference to the extra duties imposed upon him. I I think if he is serving the Board for 12 to I 16 hours a day it is unfair to expect more; I in fact, I think he ought to have an assistI ant, seeing the number of vessels that come to our port, and I suppose the Board derives a good income from pilotage. It would not look well if a vessel cams here and met with an accident owing to the pilot being incapable through overwork in doing his duty. There is another matter I may mention. I think the pilot should live near the harbor instead of at the other end of the town. Then in case of anything happening, euch as a vessel grounding on the bar, which I have seeD, he could be called by anyone. It might be tbe means of saving life. —I am, eto, RATEPAYER.
