MOTU V. RAKAUROA
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Motu, April 28. The friendly rivalry that exists between the young people of Motu and Rakauroa was further continued on Saturday in the form of a cricket match. It waa a miserable, cold day, and not at all suifcod for cricket. Tho visitors wero captained by Mr O’Doa, and tho local players by Mr W. J. Read. As tho Motu players have been successful iu winning overy match this , season, a considerable amount of entbu- | siasm was in the air. Rakauroa was sup- [ posed to havo a fairly strong combination, and, in fact, they very nearly proved too strong for the Motu team. Rakauroa won tho toss, and sene Motu to tho wickets. They wore dismissed for tho small total of 80. At this stage of tho gamo an adjournment for luncheon was made to Mr Hao sen’s hall, where a sumptuous repast was partaken of. Whon tho game was resumed Rakauroa sent Campbell and o‘Doa to the wicket. The captain, who was ex* peefced to do great things for his team, was j speedily dismissed by E. Dereoourt’s deadly bowling. . Park and Shaw had the same fate, resulting in the first over for Derecourt 3 wickets for 1 run. The remainder in conjunction with those mentioned concluded their* innings for 53 runs, Tho next innings • was the ono to tell the tale. The Motu skipper did hia duty right well and instructed hia men to force the game, which was responded to* The Motu skipper and Dereoourt got set and gave a good account of themselves, tho latter making top Bcore, and the skipper coming well up. After some good batting by the Motu team tho score of 83 runs was quickly got together, ihe innings then closing for nine wickets down. Rakauroa again went to the wicket with ‘Patterson and Campbell batting. Tho former proved himself a perfect stonewaller, but the latter was dismissed after a very respectable score, and the remainder quickly fell to Derecourt’s bowling. Tho most interesting part of the proceedings was within the last few minutes. Rakauroa wanted five runs to win and one wicket to fall. Dereoourt was equal to the occasion and sent the last wicket dying, the game resulting in a win for Motu by four runs amidst great ex oitement
