RAILWAY MATTERS.
A MISAPPREHENSION.' ' |f| The Opotiki Herald has got a bit “ mixed ” ovor our railway projects, as tha following from a recent issue will enow:— “ Wo have always had a suspicion in oaf minds that our Gisborne neighbors are not particularly Rnxious for railway communication with Opotiki, uua the latest developments appear to bear this oat. At a meeting of toe Cook County Counoil the proposed inland light railway from Te Karaka was considered. It was decided J that 50 miles, from Te Karaka to Metohia, 'yi should be constructed, the estimated cost of whioh is £IOO,OOO. Tho Government is to bo asked to pass an Act eaipowr , l ?£| V' / the construction of a narrow gaug > line, the Government guarantee-' ing interest and to indemnify =„V themaolves by rating, if necessary, on tbo bettermont plan. Tho Government is also to be asked to assist by a money grant because tbo lino will greatly increase tbo receipt of the Gisb’orne-To Karaka lino. Quito so 1 but where do we coma in? Of oonrse, it is everybody for themselves in this world, and our Gisborne friends are doing no more than looking after their own interests. Hatabia, the point to which the lino is proposed to be carried, lies about 50 miles to tho west of Te Karaka, so that it can readily bo seen Opotiki plays no part in tho schemes of Gieborne people. The probability is also that the next project will bo a line to Tiniroto, to tho east, about half-way to Wairoa. From this they could strike out for Waikaremoana, and so get the run of the tourist traffic. Our Gisborne neighbours can assuredly cot bo licensed of want of enterprise.”
