(Per. Press Association.) Nelson, last night. The new dam at the waterworks was formally oponod yesterday by Councillors and the public, Miss Laura Tatton, daughter of Or Tatton, breaking a bottle of ohampagno against tho wall of the dam, which cost over The dam has greatly improved the water supply, which is now ablo to cope with all fires, enabling four branches of hose to be used. The supply to the high lovels has also enormously increased. ' Heavy rain fell the last two days, and all tho rivors ore in frosh. The rain will do great good, especially by extinguishing the destructive bush fire which was raging in the Trass Valley for some days. The Virginian buck allotted by the Government to tho Nelson Acclimatisation Society, escaped from the yard' of the Union Bank some days ago, and disappeared in tho Maitai Valley. It is still uneaptured.
