Per Press Association. Christchurch, last night. Dr Cooko, resident house surgeon o Christchurch Hospital, has resigned, ag the result of complaints that tho management of tho hospital is unsatisfactory.
Auckland, last night. Mr Massey had an enthusiastic demonstration on entering the Drill Hall at Auckland last night, also on rising to speak. He was frequently applauded during his speech. There were occasional expressions of disapproval, but on ths whole tho meeting was orderly. At the conclusion the following motion was carried by acclamation : “ This meeting places on record its appreciation of the services to the colony of tho leader of the Opposition, and begs to thank him for his able and slatosmanliko address.”
Tho Auckland gold returns for the past three weeks total £57,036. New Plymouth, last night. , For somo timo improvements to the harbor at Moturoa have been in band. To-day a new section was completed at the end of the breakwater. It is hoped to carry on tho exteasion work continuously, giving bettor shelter to tho wharf.
The weather continues dull, though ihero has been little ram.
Napier, last night Timothy McCarthy, a young man, employed at Ross’s rope and twino factory, got his left arm caught in a carding machine last night, and his injuries necessitated the limb being amputated at the joint.
' Hamilton, last night. An old building in the centre of the town, formerly an auction-mart, and since used as a store and temporary fire brigade station, was burned down this morning. The brigade rescued their appliances. The loss is estimated at £6do.
* Wbangaroi, la3t night. It is reported that Mr E. Gillon, local railway manager, is to be promoted So the locomotive department at Wellington.
