Received 12.48 a.m., March 4. London, March 3. Tho Orient Company protest strongly against Mr Reid's suggestion that they ore deliberately inflicting injury on a mercantile community. The Orient Company is willing to continue the service if Government guarantee 5 per oent on the capital employed. Many concerned in the Australian trade approve of Mr Bhownaggcee’s suggestion for a State mail service as a means, of promoting unity of the Empire, only they insist it must at least be equal to the one Australia has enjoyed for 20 years.
STATEMENT BY ORONTES' OFFICERS,
By Electric Telegraph—Per Press Association—Copyright. Received 9.57 p.m., March 3. ' SYDNEY, Mar. 3. The _ statement that the Oronbes refused the mails at Marseilles was news to the officers of the 'vessel. ■Owing to the bad weather the vessel had to life off Marseilles, No.mails were offered. The vessel was 16 hours at Naples, and no mails .were offered. The officers state that if mails, were refused at Marseilles they were foreign bags, which the agent may have refused to accept* .They, believe that no English mails were sent from Marseilles.
