CONDITIONAL LICENSES, John H. Aislabio was granted a con. | ditional license at Matawhero saleyards on March 3rd. Sergeant McKenzie reported that in a few months’ time he expected to be. in a position, from actual observation, to report as to the need of such licenses, A conditional license was granted to J H. Martin for St. Patrick’s Sports on March 16. Sergeant McKenzie opposed the application, stating that he always opposed applications, for acpial gatherings when the number of children were far in excess of the number of men. No matter how well a booth was conducted, women and children saw objectionable soenes. The Chairman said that the Committee managing the sports had probably based their arrangements upon the assumption that a license would be issued thisyear.but it must be clearly understood that they must not make any such calculation in future, as the Ilepoh’. intended to go into thp question as to the advisahility of granting conditional licenses for such gatherings. They intended to go into the question just bpfqre the next annual licensing meeting, and would then give an intimation of what they intended doing. The application was granted. A conditional license for Tolago Bay races on Maroh 17th, by George Spence (Mr Nolan) was agreed to. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Joseph Burke, Record Beign Hotel, applied for an extension of one month’s leave of absence, which was granted.

The proprietor of the Rose Hotel, Port Awanui, Mr Charles Butler, had died on February 15th. Constable . McLeod, . Tolago Bay, reported that the management of the Tolago Bay Hotel had been somewhat loose of late and objectionable persons, more or leas under the influence of liquor, were allowed to loaf about the premises to the discomfort of the respectable public. Complaints had been made by travellers of the difficulty in getting meals on arriving from a journey,: and also of the . meagreness' of the table kept. Pakarao Hotel : The conduct of this hotel has been satisfactory, and no complaints have boen made by the travelling public. He believed the house to be oarefully managed, and the necessary at tention was being paid to the wants of the public frequenting the house. , The Chairman said the reports were very satisfactory with the exception of that in regard to the Tolago Bay Hotel. If these | conditions continued evidence would ho brought before the-Bench in support of t statements contained in the report, and it were necessary the Benoh might refu the granting of a lioonse when the app cation oamo up at the annual meeting, people had grounds for complaint it wou bo better if they had the courage to con before the Bench and state them.
