SMART POLICE:
A PERSECUTION.
,(Per Press Association.) ~ Waihi, yesterday. Thomas Gardiner, a well-known music dealer, was fined 5s and costs for being on licensed premises during prohibited, hours. The facts are that Gardiner’s wife was seriously ill. He went to the hotel at 11 o’olook at night for a stimulant for her and finding Sergeant Sheehan on watch appealed to him for permission to get some gin. Gardiner, whom the police admit is a sober man, asked tho sorgeant to come and satisfy himself as to his wife’s illness, lhe sergeant refused, and on returning home Gardner, finding his wife no better m desperation went to the hotel and secured the gin. The case caused grea'i public indignation.- The fine and legal costs were promptly paid by public subscription, as a protest against the aotio.n of the police. Tbe amount was offered twentyfold.
