A MEMORIAL,
.(Per Press Association.) Timaru, last night. The ceremonial unveiling of a memorial to the deceased troopers of South Canter, bury took place this afternoon. Tbe memorial consists of the figure of a trooper standing at ease, 6ft 6in high, in marble, upon a solid granite die and base IOIt high above grey stone steps. A' suitable inscription and the names of 27 deceased troopers are engraved in the die. H a Excellency the Governor drew oil tbe veil, and made a brief, sympathetic speech’ followed by a longer address by the Mayor, Mr Craigte, who gave a patriotic resume of the despatch of the contingents, and expressed sympathy for those whose sons and friends had not returned. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones and Archdeacon Harper also spoke. Mr R. O. Tennent, treasurer to the. committee, formally handed over the memorial to the Mayor free of debt. A feature of the proceedings was a parade of school cadets, 370 in all being present from the town and oountry sohools. They were inspected by his Excellency after the memorial ceremony, and he expressed pleasure at their numbers and bearing.
