AN IMPUDENT DESERTER
SCENE IN THE POLICE COURT. Ernest J. A. Perry, who deserted from ! G-M.s. Sparrow at Auckland in March 1903) was arrested on the oharge about three weeks ago, and has 'since been in custody awaiting the arrival- of a British warship in the port. It is necessary to remand him from weak to week, and when Perry came before Mr McCarthy, S.M., at Auckland oh Saturday for that purposo he impudently showed his resentment at having to bo kept in gaol for another week.
You want to keep me in that gaol another week, do you,” he shouted in a threatening manner to Sub-Inspector Black, who had made the application. Perry concluded tho sentence with a vulgar epithet addressed to the official.
“How dare you use suoh language,” interrupted the magistrate sharply. “ Who are you ? I don’t care,” retorted the deserted instantly. His Worship quickly ended the unseemly display by fining Perry £5 or a fortnight’s imprisonment for contempt of court, and the prisoner was at once shut up in the prisoners’ room.
