AUSTRALIA v. WELLINGTON.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night, j As tho weather continued fine there was a largo attendance on Saturday to witness the Australians batting, the number being estimated at 9000. The Wellington innings was fiuished off in a few overs for 183, Noble gettiDg the remaining three men, aDd coming out with the fine average of ten wiokets for 63 iudb. Before lunch Hopkins and Gregory put on 28, but the former was caught at tho wfokets off the first ball on resuming. The spectators then settled down to watch one of Trainper’s notable performances, but were dis-. appointed, for after making 10, not too convincingly, he was caught off a bad stroke at cover. Gregory and Duff made ample amends, and remained till 189 appeared. Duff went for tho bowling vigorously, but Gregory played in the easy, confident style of tho veteran at the game, and made some delightful strokes, particularly to leg and past point. Ho seemed to put the ball just where ho wanted, whoreas Duff skied several, and off one was nearly caught. Once, however, he got tho ball over the ropes for 6. Numerous changes were resorted to without avail, till Gregory, abandoning the more oorreot style, began to lift the ball like Duff, and then after being missed he was oaught near tho fence for. 85. Duff soon after popped a long hop ioto mid-off’s hands, having made 70. Hill and Noble put on 90, of which the latter’s share, mostly in singles, was only 16. Hill, like Duff, treated tho bowling with ho reßpoet, and scored frequent boundaries and leg hits. One fine stroke procured.him 6, and it was in trying to repeat it to accomplish the century that he came to grief. Blacklook brought, off a very fine catch, and S Hill retired with 95 to his credit. This was at 331. Armstrong, after making 17, was caught at mid-off. Gehrs compiled eight singles, and was then disposed of by the same ..sort of ball that beat Noble. Kelly hit hard and often, and wish McLeod is still in, the total being 383 for eight wickets. The local bowling had no devil in it, and the fielding was only fair. There was no dash in returning the ball, and many runs were given away unnecessarily. The Australians were very smart between the wickets, and set a good example in this respect to ordinary orioketers. The scores were :
