TEMPERANCE CONVENTION
(Per Press Association.) Hokitika, last night.
Tho West Coast Temporanoe Convention opened here this evening, a largo number of delegates being present. The Rev. Elliot presided. Addresses were aiven by Revs. Dawson, chairman of tho New Zealand Alliance Executive (Wellington), Pratt (Westport), Trescail (Greymotb), and Mr Bedford, M.H.R. The last named apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr T. E. Taylor owing to sickness, but on his behalf promised a visit later on. Mr Bedford’s speech was-most enthusiastically received. The Chairman, on behalf cf the West Coast tomperance workers, made presentations of a selection of valuable theological works to the Rev. Trescail, prior to his departure from the Coast. In making the presentation, reference was made in the most eulogistic terms to his fearless advocacy cf prohibition principles. The business of the convention commences to-morrow morning, and in the evening another publio meeting will be held.
