FIRE ON A STEAMER.

'(Per Press 'Association.)' Auckland, yestorday. At 10 o’clock laßt night tko Northern Company’s stoamer Muratoi was off Kaipara, bound to Onehunga, whon a fire was discovered in the forohold. The steamer oarriod tons of flax, 15 head of oattle, one horse and a foal. The fire hose was used effectively, but the oattle and horses were smothered by the smoke before they could bo released. The flax was totally destroyed, but on examination the damage to the vossel proved to bo very slight. The supppsed oause is spontaneous oombustion.
