A largely attended conference was held in London under the auspices of the Cobden Olub in support of free trade,with special reference to the Bugar conventions. Sugar tax delegates were present. Numerous Loudon and Provincial trades unions, co-operative societies, workmen’s clubs, and progressive organisations were represented. Lord Welby, presiding, stated that the effect of tho convention was absolutely disastrous without any return. We have surrendered an immense manufactory advantage, involving a national loss of eight or nine millions a year. A workman’s family suffered a loss of at least a pound a year. Mr Felix Schuster, vice-president of tho Institute of Bankers, declared that the convention was an object lesson of what would happen if fiscal reforms became law.
A resolution was unttr-mously carried, demanding denunciation of the convention and the removal of the war tax on sugar_
