WELLINGTON NEWS.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. Messrs W. H. Quick, solicitor, and H. S. Wardell, ex-Stipondiary Magistrate, have been appointed Representation Commissioners under the Representation Act for the North Island, vies Dr Giles, resigned, and Major Riohardson, doceased. Part oE their duty will be to define the Parliamentary electoral boundaries undor the City Single Electorates Act. In reply to a deputation from the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, which urged that the Government should utilise the land reclaimed in straightening the Hutt line forjyorkmen’s homes, tho Pre mier said ho was entirely in sympathy with tho principle of housing all classes of the community at reasonable rente, but the Government had already, procured land for workmen’s homes at Petone and Hutt, and until this was takon up it was premature to ask for more. Moreover, tho particular land asked for was by law spooially set aside for other purposes. When the present land for workmen’s homes at the Hutt and Petone was all taken up the Government would look for more. The bookß and cash of tho D.1.C., contained in three large safes, aro intact. Mr Corrigan, local manager of tho company, sayß he can only suggest the fusing of the electric light wire as the cause of tho outbreak. He states a smell of burning had been noticed in the building, but that was not unusual, as it often came from outside. It was not, however, passed unnoticed, as a thorough inspection of the buildiDg was made without result.
