A MARKER KILLED.
SHOT BY ACCIDENT,
Per Press Association. Blenheim, last night.
A shocking accident occurred at Vernon Butts this morning, Tom Batty, a wellknown resident, losing his life. Together with his son and a brother, engaged as markers, he had. charge of tho centre of three targets at which a squad of recruits were firing at a rapid rate at 200 yards range. The shooting had not long commenced when one of the markers rushed from the trench with the danger flag, crying out, “ You’ve Bhot the marker.” Batty was found in an unconscious state, with'a bullet wound in the head, and he died in about 20 minutes. The bullet struck a mound about six inches from the top and glanced down, passing through his brain from the centre to the left side. Deceased was about 45 years of ago, and held a colonial reputation os a marker, having attended the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting in that capacity for years.
