POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB
SPRING MEETING
FIRST DAY,
Glorious weather prevailed for the oponing day of tho Poverty Bay Turf Club’s spring meeting, and thero was a large attendance, tho fair sex especially assembling in much stronger forco than at previous meetings. Speculation was keen, and duriDg the day tho sum of T3B9G was passed through the totalisator, against .£2758 last year. Tho arrangements made for tho meeting were of a most completo character, and reflected very favorably upon Mr E, L. Maude, who has succeeded Mr J. M. Gumming.
Mr H. Pipor wielded tho starter’s flag, and with one exception got his fields well away. This was in tho Scurry, when thero WQ3 a largo field of thirteen, and several of tho horses being rather restivo at the post, tho result was. that thero was a somewhat straggling start. Tutungarehu, nicoly handled by Kirk, waited on Te Eahui and Vivacity in the Trial Handicap until tho straight was reached and cleverly defeated the lastnamed, who run himseli out in tho hands of his light-weight pilot, who had wasted to rido him. NaDce O’Neil had too much
paco for Mangamahaki, and moreovor fenced in better style in the Hurdlo Race than any of her opponents, of whom Model broke down badly and Wilson fell. Jncob carried on the running in tho First County Handicap, but when the business end was reached was done with, and Morpeth went up to Argyll and had his measure within the distance, and won cleverly, Lady lteay, who had been ridden hard throughout, finishing close to Argyll in third place. The Spring Handicap was a pretty race, Hiki being responsible for the paco until well down the straight, when A.B.N. and Oraclo headed him; but Taura thon throw out a challenge, and coming on won in a pleasing manner by a length, A.B.N. beating the other visitor by a similar distance. On 1 tho strongth of his running in the Trial Handicap Tutungarehu was mado a pronounced favorite for tho First Welter Handicap, but a stronger horseman on Vivacity in the person of Jones, who knows that gelding, was much in his favor, and tho Crackshot gelding had Tutuugarehu’s measure when the last furlong was entered upon, aud Ontario also came at him, and running determinedly, out him out of second place ; the fine dividend of £7 13s being returned on the winner. This was followed by an even bettor when the Crackshot filly Sarilla, settled the pretentions of Mr L. Williams’ fine colt Behua in the Maiden Sourry, which proved a fine betting race, and in which Faro started a strong favorite, and finished fourth, while the fractious CracknelJ, who gave a lot of trouble, headed the rest of the field. Hinotapauriki and Soultina ' were always at the head of affairs in the Flying Handicap, but the last-mentioned drew well out in the straight, and was slowing down when Hinotapauriki and Croupier came with a late run aud got within a length of her, Argyll finishing well up. Hiki, following tactics in the big race of tho day in which ho carried 6.12, cut out the work in the First Hack Handicap, but was unable to concede 41b to Morpeth ; Woodfield, who had run into third place in tbe Sourry, boing several lengths away, after having made an effort in the home stretch, got almost on tortus with Hiki.
