SOUTH AFRICAN MARKET
OATS SELLING AT A LOSS,
Per Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Department of Industries and Commerce recoived the following from the New Zealand commercial agent, datod Durbau, September 28th : Oats : In New Zealand particularly the market is very weak. B grade is offering as low as 5s per cental in bond. In fuct I have seen sale Dotes at 6s duty paid, delivered at the latter place, whioh is about Is 3d under cost. It will give some idea how really bad the market is for this line. Potatoes : Wholesalers rates te-day, in singlo case lots, are French 8s pot 661bs net; Las Palmas, in cases containing lOOlbs, 12s ; Australians, per muid, 13s to 15s; locals, per muid, 15s to 20s, accord ing to quality. Some of tho recent arrivals of French have been turned out in poor condition. This has helped to keep tho market for good stuff fairly firm. Butter : Tho market is in exactly tbe same position as when last writing. Operators are anxiously looking forward for tho arrival of the Essex, duo in about five or six days. Australian is offering at lowerrates than those given in tho previous report for parchment cloth pats. Business has been booked with prompt shipment for first-class quality and well-known brands at IOJd f.o.b. It is cxpocted that slightly lower figures will bo quoted by thorn for the middle of October shipment. Cheese : The market is as at last report —fair to good demand. Poultry : Better enquiry exists for fowls. Buyers are offering up to 5s 0.i.f.; ducks, 6s 6s to 7s per pair ; white turkoys from Ireland are being sold at Is per lb c.i.f.
