THE GISBORNE OPERATIC SOCIETY.

“ lOLANTHE.”

A crowded house greeted tho Gisborne Operatic Society at the Theatre Royal last evening on the occasion of tho second production of “ lolanthe,” tho epora being received with oven greater enthusiasm than at the opening evening. The principles acquitted themselves most successfully, and encores were the order of the evening. As Phyllis Mrs Ernest Davis greatly charmed the audience with her clever acting, and at the conclusion of tho duet with Streohon, “ All io all to One Another,” which was twice repeated, she was the recipient of several beautiful bouquets. Mrs Buckeridgo was in excellent voice, anu her rendering of " Oh, Foolish Foy,” was a real musical treat. Mrs Kennedy appeared to great advantage, and won tbe hearts of all present with her rendering of the solo “ Plead for my Boy, he Loves,” which was encored. Mr A. F. Kennedy as tho Lord Chancellor added to his long list of successes, and was compelled to repeat all the vocal numbers included in his part. Mr F. Teat was in splendid voice, and well deserved tho ovation that he received at the conclusion of his solo “ When Britaiu Really Ruled the Waves.” The fairies and peers went through thoir parts in a successful tnannor, tbe choruses being ono of the chief features of tho evening. The orchestra, under the conductor-ship of Mr E. N. Sidebottom, did excellent work. “ lolanthe ” will be repeated this evening, and the season will be brought to a conclusion to morrow night.
