FOOTBALL.
SOUTHLAND DEFEATS CANTERBURY. (Per Press 'Association.^ Invercargill, last night.
The eleventh interprovincial football match, Canterbury v. Southland; played to-day, was won by Southland by 16 points to 6. Southland won the toss, and played with a fresh southerly breeze, which materially assisted them in the first spell. The gamo throughout was good. The visiting forwards exhibited much better form than expected. In the serums they beat the local men, but were outclassed in loose play, though they fairly held their own on the line. The backs played a freelance game, which was effective in spoiling tho local backs’ passing, but it took the sting out of their own attack, tho players not being able to get back into their places at the right timo to take 'passes. The Southland scores wore the result of combined passing rushes, from which Eeid scored throe tries and Penkins one, while Manson potted a goal for Canterbury. Mullworth scored a clever try from an opening made by himself, and Deans got over as tho result of a good passing rush. In the second spell the Canterbury players taking full advantage of the wind, were continually in Southland’s territory, and had their passing been well directed at least two more tries could have been added to their score. Mr Herris, of Dunedin, controlled the game with satisfaction to both sides.
