SUNDAY TRADING.

A CONSTABLE’S TESTIMONY.

p e >.; Pre*s Association

Auckland, last night,

At tho meeting of the Mannkau Licensing Committee, Constable Tapp reported tha° the number of travellers to Onehunga on Sundays since tho inauguration of the electric tram service has been very large. Many of those peoplo went straight to tho hotels for liquor. Many people go from houso to houso for liquor all tho afternoon, and at each place say they are bona fide travellers. Threo hotelkeepers have kept their houses closed absolutely sinco the olootric cars commenced to run on Sunday, tho object being, they state, to prevent the liquor trade being brought into disreputo. Tho action of these licensees is very commendable. On tho other hand, somo of tho hotelkeepers by Sunday trading arc reaping a great and abundant harvest. Hundreds of people now come to Onehunga on Sunday, apparently for no othor purpose than to drink liquor, while many more como for the good of the outing and a ploasanb trip. Constablo Tapp concludes as follows: 11 During all my travols in London, Brighton, and many other places I novor saw onc-tonth of the number of travellers drinking on Sundays that I saw in two hotels in Onehungu on Sunday, August 30tb. The polico are compelled to go on Sunday afternoons as haid us they can to chock Sunday trading. It is monstrous that somo hotels should causo so much trouble and worry on Sundays.” Objections were lodged by tho polico against two licensees, but both were dismissed.
