LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, last night. The Council met at- 2.30. Tho second reading of the State Fire Insurance Bill was carried by 22 to 8.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30. Mr Seddon moved that this Heuse ox. tends cordial congratulations to Tasmania on the centennial anniversary of settlement of that Stato, and wishes its people continued and increased prosperity. This was seconded by Mr Massey, and agreed to on tho voices. At 5 p.m. tho Houso went into Committee of Supply for further consideration of tho Estimates. The first (.class taken was that of the Customs Department. The House resumed at 7.30. The Trade Monopolies Prevention Bill introduced by the Governor’s messago was read the first time. Consideration of the Customs Department estimates was resumed. Several members stroDgly protested against tho irritating distraction made in the classification of the tariff, and urged more liberal interpretation should be made. Tho motion to strike out tho item, Customs expert, ,8800, was lost by 29 to 22. Objection was raised to the refund of duty on bat making machinery, but the item was not altered. The whole vote for the Customs Department passed unaltered shortly before midnight.
