DEATH OF OLD COLONIST.

(Per Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. Mr Donald Lachlan Matheson, for forty years resident here, and well known as a merchant, died yesterday evening, in his seventieth -year, after an illness of some months. He interested himself chiefly in church and educational matters, being for many years on the Education Board. Ho was also one of the directorate of the Southland Building Society from early times, and latterly President. Probably no man in the community had a greater share of the confidence of the people, which was proved by tho large amount of trustee work he did, mostly for country families'. Ho was a man of benevolent disposition, and but for his modesty could have attained any punlic position in the gift of tho people.
