WHATATUTU NOTES

Messrs Richards aDd Hawkins, who have taken over Mr Long’s store here, gave a social on Saturday last in their hall. Despite the heavy rain aud high rivers about- 20 couples mado their appearance and spent a very enjoyable evening, which laßted till midnight. At the close three hearty cheers were given for Mr Hawkins, who has made himself very popular in the district. Mr H. Leslie acted as M.C.

The rivers are still very high owing to the heavy rain we had last Friday and Saturday ; the highest they have been this winter.

Service was held in the hall at 2.30 Sunday afternoon, Mr W. Hay being the praacher. The people of Whatatutu are very fortunate in having a gentleman like Mr Hay to hold service when the other preachers are unable to visit the district. It is Mr Hay’s intention to take a service whenever he can so that the people can have church every Sunday. He also in vites anybody to his house on Sunday evenings at 6.30 to a short service. The bushmen are starting to come out of the bush now after working hard for the last three months. There are about 200 bushmen in this district this year, which shows that the settlers ore of the right stamp,
