Despite showers Belfast was gaily decorated. Replying to the Corporation address the King said he hoped that his people, cherishing their own characteristics and idoals, may engage in friendly rivalry in the pains of peace, which is the true source or national prosperity and Imperial greatness. Replying to fifty other addresses he said : “My highest ambition is to follow in my motner’s footsteps and work for the good of my people. TUe prosperity of Ireland and the maintenance of the peace of nations will be my constant aim.”

The King unveiled the Victoria memorial statue, and opened the new Victoria Hospital. An old woman breaking through the soldiers’ cordon rushed to shake nands. She was knocked down by the wheels of the Royal carriage, which passed over her, the woman being seriously injured. Their Majesties were much distressed at the incident.
