CHRISTCHURCH NEWS.

MUSIC CONSEIIVATORIUM. (Per Press Association ). Christchurch, last night. At a meeting of the Board of Governors to-day a special committeo was appointed to report on the desirability of establishing a Conservatorium of Music in connection with the Canterbury College. The object of such an institution was to enable New Zealanders to obtain high musical education without leaving the colony. MR CARNEGIE’S BENEVOLENCE A letter was read from Mr Carnegie in reply to a request for a grant for the present public library in view of the alterations. It was stated that subsidies were given only to froe institutions, and plans and specifications were asked for which the Board decided would be supplied. A CAPTAIN’S TROUBLES.

In connection with the recent trouble on the American ship, Emily Reed, it is un derstood that the captain and crew bave made n mutually satisfactory arrangement in regard to terms. It is stated that the vessel is to be surveyed by two experts, one on behalf of the captain, and the other on behalf of the crew ; that the ship will pay all expenses and carry out requirements of tile surveyors ; that the chief mute arid donkeymaii bo replaced by others ; that the crew be increased by eight men in each of the two watches ; that the wages of the men be increased so as to equal tho ruling rates from Lyttelton ; that no firearms are to taken on board ; that all hands are to bo paid off in Simmonstown, or such other port in South Africa as the ship may discharge at, and that all law costs bo paid by the captain. The captain has agreed to permit the men to stay at the Sailors’ Home at his expense until things on board ship are satisfactory. The cook is the only man who does not return to the vessel. s
