A football match was played bore on Saturday 20tb, between Tokomaru and Tolago Clubs, resulted in a win for the local team by 11 points Toe scores wero : j Tolago four tries, one successful goal and one penalty goal, in all 17 ; ToKornaru I two tries. A great deal of excitement prevailed in Tolago over the match as this is I tho first Cup match played here. The I weather was perfect, and about 250 turned out to witness the match. Mr \V. Beeves acted as referee, and although being asked in the last hour, and his maiden trial at that most ungrateful post he acquited himself with credit; there was a lot of tho grumbling that seems to be part of the game, and which could he well dispensed with. The first spell was a very fast one ; a very even game resulted, and the scoros were, at call of time, six all. In the 2nd spell the Tokomaru seemed to he in difficulty from the kick off, arid the bull was in play in their 25 must of the time, which resulted in Tolago adding another 11 to their score, G. iieynoids being the most conspicuous player, also kicking the goals on both occasions from near the touch line. Tho game was a very fast one, both sides playing with determination throughout. The following players represented tho local side : Hacks: \V. McNeil, Kiugi, Bangi, Panapa, M. Murphy, G. Reynolds; Forwards : Haonga, It. Murphy, It. C. Murphy, flames, Hura, Bangiuia/i'uhiwai, J. McNeil, and J. Kirk.

The dance given by the ladies of Tuparoa was well attended and much enjoyed ; the music was played by Miss Hartley, and Mesdames Poolo and Brod- | erick, on tho piano. Owing to tho next day being Sunday, dancing concluded at miduight. Mr F. Ilargreavoa, of AVaipiro, gave his well-known gramaphono entertainment | hero, and every ono was highly pleased with it. Mr Hargreaves is to bo congratulated on possessing so good a gramaphono, be also deserved a largor attendance than was present. Tuparoa Football Club played AVaipiro on ttio ground on tho 20th, and throughout both teums played a real good hardfought, and ovonly contested game ; resulting in a win for Tuparoa by three points ; Tuparoa six points i.e. two tries, and Wuipiro penalty goal i.o. if points. There was agoud attendance of spectators, Fur Tuparoa, Mr Taylor, ono of our prominent forwards, scored, and also Mr Wi Henry, who played three-quarters.

Waipiro kicked oil, and their forwards look the hall on well down the field, and immediately caused Tuparoa to force. A good breeze sprang up at this stage, and the Tuparoa backs took full advantage of it, the high kicking of the hacks giving AVaipiro a trying time in defending their line. The AVaipiro forwards got, on a grand rush, which shifted the ball to the other end of the field, and ended in Tuckwell scoring close to the posts. The players had been too fasL for the reteree, who arrived too late to see the try scored, and to the surprise of everyone lie ordered a five-yards’ serum. Tuparoa took a turn on tile attack, and kept AVaipiro penned in their twenty-live boundary for a spell. Nurse, the AVaipiro full-back,

here made a mis-kick behind his own goal-line, and the. Tuparoa forwards uaslied down on him and succeeded in scoring. AVatson tailed to land a goal. " Some good forward play, of winch Tuparoa had slightly the best, was witnessed till hall-time sounded. With the wind in their lavor, Waipiro made the pace lively on resuming. Tuck well made a line effort to place a goal from a penalty, the hall falling just under the bar. The game at this stage was veiy fast, and some good forward rushes were put, in. Another penalty kick was awarded Tuparoa, and Tuckweli pul, the hall fairly between the uprights. With both sides level with k points each, matters became exciting, and a ding-dong battle raged. {Shortly; before time was sounded, McKenzie showed his opponents a clean pair of heels and scored a well-earned try for Tuparoa. No goal, resulted. No further score was made by either side, and the game resulted in a .win for Tuparoa by <1 points to k. t)n the whole, the exhibition was hardly up to the Coast’s best standard. The hacks did not handle the ball as well as usual, and the passing was inclined to be a trifle wild at •times. AVhite, Wilson, and Hull were the best of the Waipiro backs, and Manuel, Williams, and Warren showed up prominently among the forwards.
