BANQUET AT MASTERTON.
A TREAT WI PERE MISSED.
(Per Press Association.) Masterton, last night. A banquet in honor of Messrs A. W. Hocg and Wi Pere, M.H.E.’s, given in the Club Hotel to-day by the Maori Liberal Association, was a huge success. Owing to the nature of the gathering, no policy speeches were made. Mr Carodine (Mayor of MastertOD) presided. The Hons. Hall-Jones and Carroll were present. Apologies were received from the Premier, Hon J. Mills, Hon. Mr McGowan, Sir Joseph Ward, and Mahuta. In replying to the toast of Parliament, the Hon. J. Carroll said that the gathering was unique, and the first where Maoris had combined after the example of their European brethren. He eDjoined the Maoris to avoid had habits, to see their childred were educated, and to study the laws of health. He complimented his Maori friends on their unselfishness and patriotism. Wi Pere was unable to be present.
Mr Hogg received an ovation upon rising to respond to his toast, and a number of addresses in Maori invested the gathering with interest.
