There was a large attendance
the conference this afternoon of work men, members of the Employers’ Association, and local members of Parliament. The employers brought tip several proposals made by the Trades and Labor Council, and pointed out objections. Special exception was taken to a proposal to make preference to unionists compulsory ; to allow tlie Conciliation Board to make awards to remain in force until altered or amended by tlie Court, ; Lo Magistrates having [lower to adjudicate in breaches of awards ; and to tlie proposed provisions in the Master and Apprentices’ Bill, in regard to indenturing apprentices. Tlie members of Parliament, promised to give the objee-, lions consideration. ASYLUM ACCOMMODATION.
Several Canterbury members vised Sunnyside Asylum this afteronji. They slate that there is (sufficient sleeping accommodation ii* the men, the beds being crowded
into odd corners, and some inmates having to he content with shakedowns. There were, not enough single rooms for women. There was only one recreation room for the evening. It, was thought that special treatment should he provided for women whose minds were only temporarily deranged. There was need for a reform in the arrangements for child inmates.
