FARMERS’ UNION.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Christchurch, last night
At a meeting of tho North Canterbury branch of the Farmers' Union, Mr Leadley stated that he had made a careful comparison of tho wages paid to farm laborers and to industrial workers, and had found a heavy balance in favor of farm workers. It was resolved that the agitation for a State Bank was not in the interests of New Zealand, and matters should bo referred to tho Colonial Council. The Chamber of Commerce wrote stating that farmers would be welcome as members. The president, vico preuident, and Mr J. O’Halloran were nominated, the Executive paying subscriptions. It was resolved that tho Colonial Council be asked to approach the Railway Department, with a view to getting a uniform classification and reduction of rates on farm produce in bales, and on frozen meat and its bye proproducts. A request for the establishment of a reduced rate for single-deck sheep trucks was ordered to be sent to the Council. It was decided to ask the Stock Department to issue leailets for the use of farmers, explaining remedies and appliances used in cases of sudden illnesses among stock, and that each branch should be asked to secure medicine for the use of its members.
