SOME GRAVE CHARGES,

The Supremo Court criminal sossions wore completed in one day. There were five prisoners before tho Court. In one case of indecent assuult on a girl under 16, the Judge directed the grand jury to iguore the bill, as the prosecution had not been commenced till long after tbs month limit had boon passed. Ono prisoner, aged 17, an absconder from Burnham, who pleaded guilty in the lower Court to two charges of theft and forgery, was sentenced to one year. Auotbor old offender, though a young man, pleaded "uilly to stealing a bicycle, and was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. Alex. Finlay, for assault with iutcut to commit rape, was sentenced to threo years, and also one week for escaping from custody. Norman Naby, aged 18, for indecent assault on a girl of Hi years’ at Waimate, was sent to gaol for 18 months. In this case the infant was produced as a witness, but after a little testing His Honor decided that it was improper to attempt to obtain evidence from her. INVERCARGILL, last night. Tho Supreme Court is hearing an action for LllOO damages, brought by John Kerr against William Mair, a farmer, for breach of contract io regard to the sale of flax-growing on his property. The defence is that tiie work had to he carried on continuously, and that for a time the operations ceased. The price fixed between the parlies was 8s fid per ton, and plaintiff had a contract to fulfil which would have left him a profit of ill per ton. The ease is proceeding^
