FARTHING DAMAGES

Per Press Association^ Wellington, last night. The libel action, in which Staples and Co., brewers, claim £IOOO damages from Messrs Wright and Carman, publishers of a small paper styled the Petrel, issued in connection with tho local option and licensing elections, came on before Judge Edwards and a jury this morning. The libel is alleged to be contained in a set of verses reflecting on tho trade carried on bv Staples and Co., and their methods of conducting it. Only one witness was called by the plaintiffs, defendants calling none. Counsel then addressed tho jury. The jury brought in a verdict for a farthing damages and £SO costs,
