HARBOR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Harbor Board was held yosterday afternoon, there being present Messrs Townley (Chairman), Hepburn, Sievwright, Whinray, Harding, and Captain Tucker. The annual balance-sheet duly audited was adopted. , . , Leavo of absence was granted to JVir Coopor, who 13 out of the district. Mr llothschild telegraphed from Auckland asking if in the event of diving operations at the Tasmania wreck, could the Board’s diving gear bo obtained, and on what terms. . In reply to the Chairman the Engineer said that” the tubes wero in good order. He did not think there would be su&cient tuning for the Tasmania. Captain Tucker suggested that the uso of the gear bo allowed at the lowest terms, say a shilling on the gear being returned in good working order. Mr Whinray : Make it a pound. Tho suggestion was agreed to, at a pound. Mr Charles Fraser, craneman on the dredge, applied for an incroase of salary. Mr Whinray, who spoke highly of the work* moved that the salary be increased to Xio por month ; tho position was an
important olio. | Captain Tucker: Are you prepared to | eivc all who ask an increase ? ° Mr Harding : Had we not better go into the whole question of salaries ? The Secretary said thero were two other applications for increase, from the two carpenter employed on the slip. They claimed they should be paid the same as other competent carpenters ; they lost more timo than other carpenters owing to tho weather, and lost more tools overboard. (Laughter.; , , All the applications were referred to the Works Committee. Mr A. Dudley Dobson wrote to the Harbor Board asking when tho Board were inviting applications for an engineer, and stating that his eldest son, who was only filling a temporary position, would bo Mad to apply for the position. Mr Dobsou to be informed that tho Board were only calling for applications for a foreman of works. J;
Tlio Surveyor-General replied regarding tho Board's request that the Crown granted harbor reservations on tho banks of the Waimata and Tarnhcru rivers at Gisborne bo connected with the standard survey of tho town of Gisborne. He stated tho Chief Surveyor for Hawke’s Bay had been requested to renort on the matter, but mentioned that all standard surveys in the colony had been stopped for the present owing the great demand for settlement survey's- The Chairman said the Board would have to keep it in view and write n„ain. l't was a work that would have to be completed. The Engineer stated that •20 chains up tho Tarubcru had been done, but hardly anything up the Waimata. Air Iv Humphreys applied for the driver-ship of the hauling engines in connection with the slip, asking £1 for hauling and lowering each vessel. Deferred for future report of committee.
