A letter received by the New York police warned them that tho Mafia Society bad ordered tho destruction of every steamer nailing from New York flying the British flag. Thu Oceanic was spared out of pitv for the large number of women ami children aboard. When tho letter win*’ received r, hoax was suspected. The infernal machine contained one hundred pounds of dynamite. Jo was a most ingenious construction. It was found on tlio pier among the passengers’ luggage, tho clock-work ticking away. It was promptly dropped into the sea. YVhcn examined at first it was discovered to bo scorched, suggesting an intention to burn tho steamer. It is thought that two Italians brought the box to '-he pier. Tho police, however, suspect feuians, despite Patrick Ford’s denial.
