NEWSPAPERS COMPLIMENTED BY JUDGE CONOLLY.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, last night. At the Supreme Court criminal sessions, Mr Justice Conolly, addresssing tlie grand jury, commented on tile criminal libel case arising from a letter in the Prohibitionist paper', alleging that the drink sold by the Alexandra Hotel caused the death of four victims, and that others were dying or ill. The Judge said that criminal libel cases were rare. The great majority of the colony’s papers were conducted by discreet and able men, who were careful not to allow tho columns of their paper to be used for defamatory purposes. In this and other respects they compared favorably with the leading English papers.
