SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

An accident of a very serious nature occurred this afternoon. The Conciliation Board, engaged in hearing the wharf laborers’ and stevedores’ dispute, decided to pay a visit to the woolship Hermiouo in order to see the conditions under which the laborers work, Captain Tonkin, who had pleaded the case for the employees before the Board, was acting as Cicerone to the party, and as ho was ascending to the vessel from the deck of the lighter Fanny, the “ light screen ” on which ho had stepped gave way beneath him, precipitating him heavily to the deck, with the result that ho sustained a compound fracture of tho left lug, besides two broken ribs and a severe scalp wound, lie was immediately brought ashore and taken to the hospital, where he is doing well. Some years ago Captain Tonkin had his right leg broken through a bale of wool falling on it. The Board this afternoon passed a resolution of sympathy with Capt. Tonkin in his mishap, and adjourned until tomorrow morning.
