HON. JAMES CARROLL.
HIS OPINION ON MAORI COUNCILS.
(I’er Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Tho lion. James Carroll, Native Minister, who returned to Auckland from Rotorua on Saturday, loft this evening for Kuikoho in connection with tho native land troublo in that district. Ho will investigate tho troublo uud endeavor to effect a settlement. While at Itotorua Mr Carroll gave a day to a eonferonco of the councils under the Maori Councils Act, for tbo discussion of all matters of interest to natives except lands, which are dealt with by tho councils under tho Maori Lands Administration Act. Itogarding tho Maori Laud Administration Cuuucils, Mr Carroll states that there will bo a conference iu Wellington during tho session to discuss tho working of tho Maori Lands Administration. So far as it has gone and tho direction in which improvements cun be made, Mr Carroll is of opinion that a number of councillors in each district will havo to bo reduced to make tho councils lighter in movement and action, and tho best men possible will havo to be secured to carry out the Act.
