METAL FOR THE BOROUGH ROADS.

Sir,—X notice there is a proposal for a ' short line of railroad to the Patutahi i stone quarry. The cost is heavy and in the present state of the finances of the country hardly possible just now. May I suggest, as an alternative proposal, the U se°for the borough and for that matter the county of the quarry at Waihirere ? The limestone is the same geologically as that at Patutahi with this difference, that tho front or outcrop beds supply material for blinding the roads and consolidating them, such as is not available at the Patutahi. There is no reason whatever why the roads in Gisborne should not be equal to those at Napier. The material is available and with a railway within two miles of the quarry there ought to be no difficulty in supplying the town with an abundanco of splendid stone. I was at the place a few days ago, and was surprised to find that proposals are made for the supply of I’atutahi limestone when tho Waihirere has an unlimited quantity of good limestone, with an abundance of blind. I venture to bring the matter under tho notice of the authorities as the town might easily possess a quarry containing unlimited supplies of road material at small expense and within easy distance of the railway.—l am, etc., ■ 0.
