Recruits arriving iu South Africa are nick-named “ Brodricks ” by seasoned troops, owing to their youthfulness.
Mr Stanley, questioned in regard to age, replied that there was no limit in regard to the age of recruits sent in peace time to South Africa, which was a suitable training, ground, THE LABOR QUESTION.
Lord Lansdowne, receiving, the Scottish Missionary Society’s deputation, said that the experiment of drafting labor from Central Africa to Witwatersrand was limited to one thousand. The agreement was only for one year. The experiment would be closely watched, and if detrimental, would not be extended.
- 'ANTHRACITE VERDICT. NEW YORK, March 24. The New York Herald’s version ol tiie anthracite verdict is confirmed. The masters will be allowed to continue their present methods of payment instead of by weight. The men obtain a nine hours’ day, on the sliding scale, with the principle ol a minimum wage.
