A VISIT TO GISBORNE.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.

Sir,—ln taking my departure from your township by the Westralia today for Auckland, permit me to trespass upon your valuable space by giving me an opportunity of expressing my deep appreciation of the kindness I have experienced from ail 1 have been brought in contact with during my short visit to your thriving district.

Coming as an entire stranger to Gisborne, on business connected with the Court, I can well understand that considerable forebodings would be indulged in as to the result oi my advent as a Unionist. The case is now over so far as we are concerned, and we are “ waiting to hear the verdict.”

In the meantime I desire to excess rny thanks to the Press for the nil, impartial reports of the proceedngs ; to tiie master builders, for the

friendly manner in which they conducted (heir side oi' the case ; and to aii who have contributed to make my brief sojourn a most pleasurable one indeed.

Speaking as a Municipal Councillor, I may state that, given a good water supply, and an efficient, up-to-date drainage system, Gisborne will he still more prosperous in the future than she has been in the past, and larger townships will have to look to their laurels.

With the extension of the railway system into the splendid country lying between Gisborne and Opotiki, and the fine level building sites within the town belt ready for occupation, there is no reason why, in ten years’ time, instead of a population

r>f 2500, there should not he a thrivng community of 25,000 inhabitants. Thanking you in anticipation, I am, Jours faithfully,

ARTHUR ROSSER. Gisborne, March Id Hi, 1003.
