A PLEA FOR EQUALITY.

(Per Press Association) a Dunedin, last night.

At the Women’s Christian Temperance Union Convention, in the afternoon the reports of work among seamen and the literaturo department were read and dis* cussed. Greetings were received from Manara Mehai and Mrs Abrams. Mrs Sheppard road a paper on “ The Disabilities of Women,” which was followed by an animated discussion, and the following resolution was passed : —(1) That in a free community the laws should be in the direction of giving each of its members equality of opportunity; (2) that in the best interests of the State every human being should be free to enter upon such duties and honorable occupations as may be suited to his or her natural or acquired capacity, that only by suoh freedom can the State obtain the fullest economic and social value ■of its citizens ; (S) that the legal restraints now placed upon women exclusively imply a sense of inferiority, and are dishonoring to the womanhood of the community ; (4) that the removal of the civil qnd political disabilities of women is a logical sequence to the extension of the franchise to them ; (5) that the. legal recognition of the economic equality of married women is desirable for the attainment of justice for the furtherance of a truer marriage relationship; (6). that the time has come when all disabilities which at present hinder women from sitting as members of either houses of legislature, ' r from beipg oleoted or appointed to any ptiblio office or position in the Qolqrj should be removed, and thftt yjith regard to all powers, rights and o*^" absolute ptou» tbe law ‘— •-ttA
