WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL.

(Special to Times.) Waipire Bay, last night. The ordinary meeting of the Waiapu i County Council was held this morning in the Council Chambers, thero being present: The Chairman (Mr T. E. Shorwopd), and Crs A. B. Williams, Knox, and Mindmarsh. A letter was received from the ValuerGonoral applying for payment of £ll lfs lOd, for revising valuation roll. From Dr DeLisle, District Health Officor, stating that ho had visited tho district about tho ond of January, and enclosing a report of his visit. —Deceived. Mr A. T. Ngata wroto applying for the sum of £25, as compensation for removing fences at Kaknriki, owing to tho Council laying out a now lino of road through that block. Tho Engineor stated that the Council had alroady agreed to pay £2O as compensation. It was decided that tho amount bo paid. Mr Ngata also requested that tho old road be closed as soon as tho new one was opened. Councillors decided that tho matter be loft in abeyanco for the present. 1 It was also requested by Mr Ngata that tho western end of the road near Maratarewa be formed, in tho event of the Government grant being inadequate to form the whole line as far as tho Waiapu , River. . Tho Engineer considered the grant 1 would be sufficient to form the whole 1 line. , , „ Mr Ngata also wrote asking the Coun-

cil’e permission to temporarily erect two gates oo the Makarika road. The Engineer was instructed to see Mr Ngata and explain the usual conditions upon which the Council permitted gates to bo erected.

Mr T. .1. Steele, of Parnell, Auckland, wrote with reference to his patent for burning clay for road metal.—Received. Messrs Nolan and Skeet forwarded an opinion re the validity of the lease of portions of the reserve at Te Puia Springs, and stating that they considered the lease had been illegally granted and would be upset if attacked. —Received. The Engineer’s report was then read, stating the progress of work in the County since last meeting. The Council then went into Committee to open tenders, which were received os follows :—Contract 15 : Thorenson .£59, Puhatu £SO (accepted), Crooke £75, Iluaki £65, Banks £54 10s, Taylor £55. Contract 16: Huaki £7B, Thoren3oD £65 (accepted), Ranks £BS 10s. Contract If : Enoka, Rukaratu and Co. £340 (accepted). Cr Knox proposed that the balance of tho Awanui-Kawakawa grant be spent in erecting culverts aud the Awanui-Tohora road.

The motion was seconded by Cr Hind marsh and carried.

At the suggestion of Cr Hindmarsh, the engineer was instructed to report on the damage done by the Mangahawini stream near the Tokotiiaru footbridge. The Chairman proposed that the engineer be instructed to take the necessary steps for raising a loan over Awatere special district for the construction of the Awatore-Taurangakautuku and 'vopounawu road, which was seconded by Cr Knox.

Accounts to the amount of .£713 4s 8d wero passed for payment, the principal amounts being: McCracken, .£321 15s lOd ; \V. O’Ryan, £IOO 18s scl ; Richardson and party, £59 Is; Engineer’s party, £35 7s; Hillman, £25 4s.
