A trial match was played on Victoria Domain on Saturday afternoon in view of the representative match with Hawke’s Bay on Saturday next. Sides wore choson by Hodge and W. Gibson. Tho former’s sido could only total 56 against tho bowling of Crawford and McConnell. Iveson, who put 14 together nicely, was tho only batsmon to go at the bowling. Crawford took three for 7, and McConnoll four for 8. Gibson’s sido adopted forcing tactics. None of the batsmen stayod long, but each added to tho total, which roaehed 106. Bilhacn (10), Itayrnond (12), and W. Gibson, Crawford, and W. Hooves (10 each) wore the principal scorers. Iveson was tho only bowler who required playing, and ho capturod six for 26. Most of the best bats fell to this bowler, who sonds down a slow-left-hand leg-break. McCrodio improved with the gloves as the game progressed, and did some smart work towards tho finish, stumping two men and catching ono.

THE EEPEESENTATIVE ELEVEN,

On Saturday afternoon, Messrs D. C. Hawkins, A. Crawford, and W. Gibson selected tho following eleven to play against Hawko’s Bay noxt Saturday at Ormond: —

A. M. Beale (Waipiro) : A useful medium-pace bowler and sound bat. Has .represented Auckland and Hawke’s Bay. *A. Crawford (County) : Serviceable ■ modium-pace bowler, who has been exceptionally successful in local inter-club matches. Good forcing bat when once sottled down. Smart field.

W. Gibson (United) : Useful all-round player. Has represented Southland, Hawko’s Bay, and Poverty Bay. A. H. Hodgo (West End) : Stylish batsman, with fine strokes on the off-side. Fair change bowler. J. Iveson (United): Included in team as a bowler. Broaks from leg with a slow loft-hand delivery. Useful batsman. E. E. Ludbrook (Tuparoa): A batsman with exceptionally sound defenco. Has represented Hawko’s Bay, Otago, and Povbrty Bay, and has some long scores opposite his name. Smart field at point. w. S. BlcCredio (United): The wicketkeeper ; shows promise of developing into a man with the gloves. Fair batsman.

D. K. Porter (United): Fast bowler; 'good bat; fine field. Is not in form, but could not be left out on all-round ability. H. Sharp (County): Graceful batsman, with many good scoring strokes ; but dofonco nono too sound. Fair field.

K, S. Williams (Tnparoa): Good all round player; in fine form this season. J. N. Williams (Waipiro): A finished batsman, who scores rapidly. Has lately toured the colony with Lord Hawke’s eleven, for whom he played on several occasions.

The emergencies aro: J. Gibson (United), It. W. Barton (County), Raymond (County) and Plimmor (West End). They aro all good all-round players, and only the fact that they havo not been playing regularly this season kept the first three named out of the oloven.

Tho olevou is a very fair one, and thoroughly representative of tho strength of tho district. They will meet a great bowler in A. E. Trott next Saturday, but wo expect to see tho local team make a oreditablo show against him. The batting strength is there, and the bowling, though not brilliant, has variety. Tho Cricket Association on Saturday evening appointed Mr D. C. Hawkins umpire and Mr F. G. Sharp scorer for tho Poverty-Bay Hawke’s Bay match at Ormond ou Saturday next. The Ormond ground is looking in splondid ordor just now, and tho Cricket Association is having it put in first-class ordor for tho match. <. Mr Caesar is lending valuable assistance in this direction. Those who attend tho match on Saturday should sco somo tall scoring.
