Private letters from South Africa repor the very serious illness of Mr R. \V Wale, who left here three months ago fo Capetown, suffering from throat malady It appears that there are little hopes fo bis recovery. Mr 11. A. Gordon arrives here tonigh to investigate on behalf of tho Govern rnent the compensation claims in regarc to the proclamation of the Hokitika rivei as a sludge channel. A second attempt was made to float the Hokitika dredge down the river on lasi night’s flood. Tho dredge, however grounded on tho south side of the rivet about a mile from tho wharf. As tho rain ceased the river is falling. Probably the machinery still a'board will be punted down and the hull takon to pieces whore it lies and floated down for shipment to Nelson, in which district tho dredge will bo re-elected.
