ENGINE DRIVERS' UNION

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Arbitration Court’s award in the dispute between the stationary and traction engine drivers’ union and employers grades the drivers into four classes : (1) Those with first-class certificates of competency; (2) first-class certificates of service; (3) second-class certificate of competence ; (4) second-class certificate of service. A week’s work is not to exceed 48 hours, exclusive of time for getting up steam. No discrimination clauses are substituted for preference to unionists. An employer may arrange the working of his weekly hours by day or night, according to the exigencies of his business, and overtime rate shall be paid for all hours in excess of 48, except where woak is necessary in consequence of a breakdown. A minimum wage is fixed, for first class competeney 10s per day ; first-class service and second-class competency, 9s per day; second-class service, 8s a day. The award applies only to men who have certificates under the Inspection of Machinery Act. Locomotive and traction engine drivers are not included.
